Ryzen 2000 series was a huge success of AMD and the company is looking forward to providing more to enthusiasts with their Threadripper CPUs with 2nd Generation Ryzen treatment.
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2000 Series & X399 TR4 Refresh Due in August
The Ryzen 2000 series is set to launch in August along with TR4 socket motherboards. There is conflict in information about the new boards However, some indicate that X399 chipset could get an X499 replacement. There are also reports that Threadripper 2 will come along with a new set of motherboards on the current X399 chipset.
The upcoming X399 refresh depends on the creativity of motherboard makers but we can expect few good things so stay tuned.
Threadripper 2000 Series CPUs – What to Expect
Higher Clock Speeds & Better Overclocking
Threadripper 2 will be getting Zen+ 12nm treatment as seen with Ryzen 2000 series, that means average clock speeds up to 300 MHz higher than 1st generation of Threadripper in multithreaded workload. That certainly means higher multi-core clock counts/speed in the mid to high 3GHz range and single core turbo in mid 4GHz range.
The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X has a base clock speed of 3.4 GHz and a Turbo + XFR of 4.1 GHz.
If 2nd gen Ryzen is any indication we can expect a Ryzen Threadripper 2950X to hit a core clock of 3.7 GHz+ and a Turbo of 4.35 GHz+. Better overclocking potential also goes without saying.
Cache Latency Improvements & Faster DDR4 RAM Speeds
The cache latency is improved with new L1, L2 and L3 cache improvement that Zen+ introduces in Threadripper 2000 series and it will be a good show of a performance in terms of gaming where the first generation of Threadripper could not do well. Overall 10% of performance lead is expected compared to the first generation of Threadripper CPUs.
Zen+ also means support for fast DDR4 RAM speeds which is possible through improvements in memeory controller. The second generation of Ryzen is able to reliably support DDR4 RAM rated at speeds nearly 1GHz higher than its predecessor and you can expect 2nd gen Threadripper with X399 motherboard refresh.
Threadripper is already a beast and this summer with faster clocks, faster RAM and lower latency you can expect to see the beast get leaner, meaner and worse.
