Grand Theft Auto VI as per report will achieve staggering milestone: earning $1 billion in its first week of release. While this comes as no surprise to fans and industry insiders. Especially given the immense success of its predecessor, GTA V. There are a number of factors to pose challenge for GTA VI to surpass the launch performance of its predecessor.

A Gaming Phenomenon

The Grand Theft Auto series, developed by Rockstar Games, has carved a prominent place for itself in the gaming industry. Its success transcends the boundaries of video games and rivals that of other major forms of entertainment, such as television and movies.

With GTA V alone selling over 175 million units worldwide as of February 2023, the franchise has proven its immense popularity. In fact, within just three days of its release, GTA V generated a jaw-dropping $1 billion in sales.

Great Expectations for GTA VI

Given the unprecedented success of GTA V, it’s only natural to expect GTA VI to follow suit. Industry analyst Joost Van Dreunen, as reported by PSU.com (via TweakTown), predicts that GTA VI will sell approximately 25 million units upon its release. Such figures would undoubtedly result in significant sales for Take-Two Interactive, the publisher behind the franchise.

Surpassing the Success of GTA V

However, surpassing the success of GTA V’s launch may prove to be a daunting task for GTA VI. GTA V launched in 2013, about six to seven years after the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles launched.

This strategic timing allowed GTA V to capitalize on the established user base of those consoles. This will result in a massive player adoption rate.

An Uphill Battle

In contrast, GTA VI will likely release for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S between 2024 and 2025. That’s roughly four to five years after the latest console generation’s launch.

This potentially puts GTA V at an advantage, as it would have enjoyed a two to three-year head start, potentially attracting a larger player base. It’s important to note, however, that this speculation is based on current information and subject to change with official announcements.

The Long Wait Continues
