This announcement has generated discontent among Overwatch fans eagerly anticipating the game’s story, lore, and characters. The backlash has primarily occurred on social media platforms.
Blizzard’s messaging surrounding the pricing reveals the following information:
Overwatch 2: Invasion offers three action-packed missions in Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg. These missions occur on massive maps with complex objectives and feature an in-depth storyline to guide players. The intensified forces of the Null Sector will relentlessly attack until players dismantle them. Players will face challenging enemies, including powerful Artillery and deadly Stalkers.
The Overwatch 2: Invasion Bundle, priced at $15 USD, provides access to the permanent Overwatch 2: Invasion Story Missions. Additionally, it includes 1,000 Overwatch Coins (equivalent to the Premium Battle Pass, valued at $10 USD). A new Sojourn Legendary skin (valued at $19 USD). And also permanent access to Sojourn as a playable hero. Sojourn gets unlocked upon completing Story Mission challenges.
The Overwatch 2: Ultimate Invasion Bundle, priced at $40 USD, includes all the features mentioned above, along with the Null Sector Premium Battle Pass, featuring 20 Battle Pass skips (valued at $30 USD), an additional 1,000 Overwatch Coins (bringing the total to 2,000 Overwatch Coins, valued at $20 USD), and two additional Legendary skins for Cassidy and Kiriko (valued at $38 USD).
While Blizzard and Activision may offer justifications based on financial earnings, metrics, forecasts, and business strategies, the situation prompts reflection on the need to package and present a video game with such detailed pricing information. The response from fans indicates frustration and disappointment in the way the pricing structure has been communicated.
