If you are streaming guy playing games or doing live streams, a question that you might ask yourself is what are the best OBS settings to record videos. You had that question in mind that’s the reason you are here. So, let’s get started with the step by step guide.
Following settings are recommended. However, I do not know what system (specifications) you are having and your internet connection speed. So, consider modifying these OBS settings a little bit if something doesn’t work right for you.
These Are Best OBS Settings for Recording Videos
To change and setup OBS recording setting navigate to Settings > Output and update Output Mode to Advanced.
Now, Update the recording to MP4 and set audio track to 1.
If you have another option in Encoder, make sure to choose it instead of x264 in OBS setting under “Encoder.”
Now select rate control CBR and set the bitrate to 40000. In case, you have a low-end PC you can downscale the bitrate to 15000-25000 depending on your specifications. You should try upscaling it, and it could help you a lot in video quality.
Afterward, open your recording tab and you will be looking at a bunch of options. First of all, “Type” is set to Standard and select the recording path. This will be the location where your screen captures will be stored. I’d recommend you to create a folder where you’d like OBS to save your screen recordings and select it in the settings.
Final OBS settings to change on the following screen are in the Two-Pass Encoding. Set GPU to 0 and B-frames set to 2.

If you want to use more than one track, modify the Track 2’s Audio Bitrate to 320 as well. Now click on Audio from the left side menu and choose the sample rate to be similar to as of your microphone’s.
If you have a second desktop audio device, choose it in “Desktop Audio Device,” otherwise, let the setting be disabled.
Then select the microphone you want to record with. Leave all the other settings as they are.

Once you are done setting up audio in your OBS studio, its time to make adjustments in video settings.
If your “Base (Canvas) Resolution” is set to 1080p, these are the ideal settings to record at there is no need to make changes in it. However, you can change the “Output (Scaled) Resolution” to 1280 x 720 or let it be 1080p as well if you have a high-end PC.
If you are getting your videos recorded in the poor quality you may need to adjust the downscale resolution properly. It depends on your system’s specifications, so make adjustments and see which one works.
Set the Downscale Filter to 32 samples
If you are recording for YouTube and have good specification computer, I’d recommend you to choose 60FPS. If you do not have a high-end PC, 30FPS is ideal settings to select. Now click on Apply and OK to save settings.

The last to do when setting up OBS is in the ‘Advanced’ menu.
