Last week, Pakistan witnessed the launch of its first-ever locally produced electric bike i.e. the Jolta JE-70. The launch ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was thoroughly appreciative of eco-friendly bike stating it will be of great benefit to the people as well as the environment.

In the latest development, the CEO of Jolta, Mohammad Usman Sheikh, told the media that the bike has received an overwhelming response from the people, although, no numbers pertaining to units booked or units sold were revealed by the CEO.

He also highlighted that the JE-70 has, thus far, been most appealing to the students, teachers, and courier companies, since the said motorcycle has a very little running cost and is set up perfectly for the people who wish to do daily short journeys within the city.

Sheikh further added that the JE-70 is Pakistan’s first fully locally manufactured e-bike that features indigenously developed technology, without any partnership from an international manufacturer.

The e-bike features an 800-watt electric motor that is powered by a 20AH battery. The motorcycle can cover 45 to 50 kilometers of distance on a single charge, has a top speed of 50 kilometers per hour, and can be fully charged overnight. The motorcycle has a price tag of Rs. 82,500.

While talking to the media outlet, Sheikh highlighted that “The e-bike needs an overnight charging of 1.5 units at home which is sufficient for [an] 80km ride. The bike will only cost Rs. 1,000 per month on consumers’ wallets as compared to Rs. 4,000-5,000 on a petrol-driven 70cc bike. An e-bike owner will save at least Rs. 4,000 per month.”

While the completely indigenous development of an electric bike in Pakistan is a promising step, the question still looms as to whether or not the said bikes will be practical in a market that lacks a proper charging infrastructure.

Plus, since Electric Vehicle is still a new concept to a lot of automakers, the maintenance of the motorcycle also seems to be a valid concern. It will, therefore, be interesting to see how Jolta caters to these concerns.
