DaVinci Resolve Studio Beta Now Supports AV1 Encoding for AMD Radeon GPUs

BlackMagic Design announces DaVinci Resolve Studio’s beta update. It now supports AV1 encoding on AMD Radeon GPUs. AMD graphics card users and DaVinci Resolve Studio editors can now use AV1 encoding. This new encoding outperforms H256 (HEVC) encoding. AV1 is also considered “royalty-free,” unlike HEVC. HEVC still requires royalties even though it’s more available than AV1.

AMD Radeon users receive this support last, as NVIDIA and Intel GPUs have had this update for months. Intel’s Arc GPUs received AV1 support in April, while NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPUs received support at launch last year.

The DaVinci Resolve 18.5 b2 update changelog doesn’t specify AMD graphics cards. However, it’s expected that the support will cover the current desktop and mobile series of AMD RDNA 3 architecture products.

Other improvements include enhanced bitrate and quality when encoding AAC audio in Windows 11. Fixed issues with syncing Blackmagic Presentation’s markers. Resolved issues with temp and tint wheel sensitivity on micro and mini panels. The update also fixes issues with composite mode on disabled nodes. Also, setting color space in the media pool for color-managed timelines. It also supports magic mask tracking after rippling node changes—and incorrect gamma when caching to Apple ProRes 4444 on Apple Silicon.

Furthermore, the update fixes audio playback issues when changing clip speed. The pitch correction offline audio clips in OpenTimelineIO import issues with per-timeline overrides for disabling Fusion tone mapping and more.
