Intrinsically, JavaScript files are not harmful, but some users attach them and send them to other people and when you click on it, you are directed to a website and continues downloading of ransomware or other types of malware.

Gmail can even detect JavaScript files even if they are sent ass .zip, .tgz, .gz, or a .bz2. In case, if you really want to send JavaScript to your friend or a co-worker, Gmail recommends you to upload it to the Google drive instead.
