Google lost ownership of blogspot.in domain losing hundreds of thousands of links

by Adeel Younas

Google have lost ownership of its blogspot.in domain according to WHOIS record. The domain is part of Google’s product Blogger, a blog-publishing service acquired in 2003.

Country specific domains were added to protect users content. For example if some article is requested by a local government to be removed it wouldn’t appear on that country but remain intact.

From a WHOIS lookup, it seems that the blogspot.in domain has been picked up by a domain service provider.

Blogspot.in is Bloggers domain name for India and when a user from India request or open a blogspot based he would eventually be redirected to blogspot.in domain.

Blogger points to username.blogspot.in as opposed to username.blogspot.com. A lot of users in India then also end up sharing .in permalinks all over the Web

Domain Name: blogspot.in

Registry Domain ID: DE2DC9C0E8E694C28ADEF0F444F121B45-IN

Registrar URL: www.domainming.com

Updated Date: 2020-06-29T20:00:06Z

Creation Date: 2020-06-24T20:00:05Z

Registry Expiry Date: 2021-06-24T20:00:05Z

Domain Status: inactive

Country specific domains were introduced back in 2013. For example blogname.blogspot.com will automatically redirect to blogspot.in for a person viewing from India. Similar it would redirect a Canadian viewer to blogname.blogspot.com.ca.

Google hasn’t been focusing on blogspot or Blogger from quite sometime. This mistake wouldn’t just hurt Google but also bloggers who were sharing their URLs with blogspot.in instead of blogspot.com
