Li-Fi tested in Pakistan by Comsats University Student

Pakistan is one of the fastest growing IT industry in the world Another Impressive work is being initiated by a Pakistani student. A student of Comsats Institute of Information Technology Lahore, Department of Computer Science named Mashood Abbasi under the supervision of Dr. Saqib Rasool Chaudhry also made a project on LIFI technology and it was presented in an exhibition which took place at COMSATS University Lahore.

LIFI technology uses a light bulb to establish data communication for data transmission and illumination simultaneously. Two third of the total population in the world does not have access to the internet, gaining access to the internet by just turning on the light bulb will be more than just an achievement.

Scientists of different countries have started research on this technology and it’s a very proud feeling that Pakistan has also started working on this technology In today’s world wireless technology especially radio waves technology is the most common way of communication. Radio frequency waves have dominated the wireless data transmission because of broad coverage, however, there are some issues where radio waves face problems such as in, ICU, Operation theatres, nuclear plants and air-planes where radio waves cannot be used.

Scientists have been working on optical wireless communication and it is a proven idea that light could be used for data communication and a new technology named LIFI is being developed where light can be used to access the internet. Light can be used in all the above problems mentioned in radio waves technology.

This technology is not costly as led of only Rs 1 used for light. It is an efficient and green technology and environment-friendly too as it produces very less carbon emission as compared to routers and other devices. No external equipment is required and a bulb can be used for data transmission.

However, a lot of work is needed to be done on this technology. Aspects, such as security, video conferencing and enhancement in the covered area are the main areas under consideration.

Government and private sector should support research and development in these projects.
