Are you one those who thought AMD will be revealing only Zen 2 based EPYC processors that are a 7nm product? in “Next Horizon” event. You should also consider Radeon Instinct MI60 announced by AMD’s SVP for Radeon Technologies Group on the State. Radeon Instinct MI60 is one of world’s first 7nm GPU.

AMD announces Radeon Instinct MI60 and Instinct MI50 at 7nm

The Radeon Instinct MI60 features a 2x uplift in density for a total of 13.2 billion transistors. You’ll be bumped up with 1.25X performance boost on current Vega-based Instinct cards at 50 less power consumption at same clock speed.

This GPU is built on “Enhanced” Vega architecture that includes 64 compute unit with 4096 stream processors and 32GB of HBM2 along with 1TB/sec of memory bandwidth. There will be another variant named Instinct MI50 with 60 CUs, 3840 SPs, and 16GB ECC HMB2. It will be first PCIe 4.0-capable GPUs that has double bandwidth over PCIe 3.0 solutions. The next generation Infinity Fabric Link tech allow a peer to peer GPU communication at 200GB/s.

When it comes to performance, AMD says that Radeon Instinct MI60 offers 14.7 TFLOPS FP32 and 7.4 TFLOPS FP64 compute. The Instinct MI50 pares those numbers down to 13.4 TFLOPS and 6.7 TFLOPS respectively.

These Radeon Instinct cards are especially for HPC and deep learning apps and they don’t have a display port. So if you were planning to buy one for gaming your are out of luck.

“Legacy GPU architectures limit IT managers from effectively addressing the constantly evolving demands of processing and analyzing huge datasets for modern cloud datacenter workloads,” said Wang. “Combining world-class performance and a flexible architecture with a robust software platform and the industry’s leading-edge ROCm open software ecosystem, the new AMD Radeon Instinct accelerators provide the critical components needed to solve the most difficult cloud computing challenges today and into the future.”

The Datacenter customers can expect to have Radeon Instinct MI60 Cards by the end of the year 2018. While the Radeon Instinct MI50 will not be shipping until the end of Q1 2019.
