Samsung Announces Latest 970 Pro and 970 Evo NVMe M.2 SSDs

Samsung is now a leader in storage market whether it is SSD, MicroSD cards or hard drives etc. Today, Samsung has announced the newest update for its mainstream SSD lineup Samsung 970 EVO and Samsung 970 EVO Pro these are the third generation of most selling consumer SSDs on the market and predecessor of Samsung 960 EVO and Samsung 960 Pro.

Samsung 970 Evo – New Version of Best Selling 960 series

Samsung 960 EVO is perfect and remained highest performing SSD for consumers so far and Now that 970 EVO is here it provides 3,500 MB/s reads and 2,500 MB/s writes with 500K IOPS random read and 480K random writes. It can compete and maybe win from any SSD available in the market till today. The EVO uses TCL memory and both EVO and Pro and Samsung’s new Pheonix controller is Nickel coated.

Both Samsung 970 EVO and PRO are designed based on M.2 form factor and with latest PCIe Gen 3×4 lane interface. This 970 series uses the full potential of NVMe bandwidth to deliver unparallel performance for processing a large volume of data like 3D, 4K graphics/videos, high-end games, and data analytics.

Samsung 970 PRO could be used by students and data researchers for their research which requires a lot of data processing at a faster rate.

Storage Options for Samsung 960 EVO and PRO

The 970 PRO is still using MLC memory and comes in two capacities 512GB and 1TB while the EVO variant of 970 has capacities from 250GB to 2TB. It seems at this point Samsung wants to push the cheaper, easier manufacturer Evo series to consumers since the majority of the manufacturers has already abandoned MCL NAND due to higher cost.

Reliability of 970 series

The 970 PRO and EVO deliver amazing endurance and reliability. Featuring five-year warranty and up to 1,200 TB data written which is 50 percent higher compared to previous Samsung 960 series. Dynamic Thermal Gaurd Technology protects it from overheating by automatically monitoring and maintaining optimal temperatures with a nickel coated controller.

Pricing and Availability

The 960 EVO will launch at the slightly lower price compared to launch MSRP of 960 EVO. The prices are now improving due to NAND flash manufacturer have their 64L 3D NAND production hitting full stride. These SSDs will be released on May 7th with retail prices starting from $329.99 and $119.99 USD for Samsung 970 PRO and 970 EVO respectively.

  1. I am using 960 EVO and any SATA based SSD is no where near to it and I am pretty sure that 970 would be amazing as well.
