Qualcomm and TSMC have figured out finally how to squeeze every bit of extra performance out of 7nm node with Snapdragon 865+ or Snapdragon 870. The chipset is named SM8250-AC as per the company’s nomenclature.

The primary core of Snapdragon 870 runs at 3.2GHz which’s 0.26 GHz faster compared to 2.94 on Snapdragon 865. The Kirin 9000 and its primary core clocking at 3.13GHz but Qualcomm has managed to reclaim the title of clock speed.

Snapdragon 870 is using Kryo 585 cores based on ARM’s Cortex-A77 with in-house tweaks. The Snapdragon 888 CPU is based on newer Cortex-X1 and A-78 instead of Cortex-A77 at 2.84GHz frequency. There is more to add to the performance story ours.

It’s been released but still, the real-life test and benchmarks will reveal the real-truth and we will keep our eyes open for it.

Performance of Snapdragon 870 5G:

The Adreno 650 GPU is back but it’s not clear yet whether or not it will receive a clock boost of its own. It is also not made clear whether the GPU will be running at 587MHz – frequency of Snapdragon 865 or 670MHz – frequency of 865+. Hexagon 698 and Tensor Accelerator are delivering the same 15 TOPS as the two 865 chips so they haven’t got any boost – that’s for sure.

  • The display driver can run 1440p class panels at up to 144Hz (or 4K at 60 Hz) and supports HDR10+ (Rec. 2020 color gamut).
  • The Spectra 480 ISP is also unchanged with support for sensors up to 200 MP, 8K video capture at 30 fps (and 4K at 120 fps), high dynamic range videos using the HDR10+ and Dolby Vision standards.
  • There’s no onboard 5G modem, instead, the 870 will be paired with an external Snapdragon X55 with sub-6 and mmWave support (up to 7.5 Gbps downlink speeds).
