Cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer’s hard drive. Cloud is like a metaphor for the Internet. Instead of running apps on yourself they run on shared data servers you just need to plugin, cloud computing is fast and cost less.

What Cloud computing is not just about your hard drive. When you run programs or store data on hard drive, it’s called local storage and computing. Whatever you need is physically present there, that’s why accessing data is fast and easy. Working offside of hard drive is that’s about tech giants are researching for decades.

Cloud is not about having dedicated hardware server physically and storing data on a home or a office network. To consider the technology as cloud its necessary that you need to access your data or programs over the internet. As an individual you may never have any idea about how data is processing on the other end, but in business term it is to know how data is being processed on the other side of the connection. At the end results are same: cloud computing can be accessed anywhere, anytime with an online (internet) connection.

Common Cloud Examples

Google Drive: This is a pure cloud computing service, with all the apps and storage found online.

Apple iCloud: Apple’s cloud service is primarily used for online storage and synchronization of your mail, contacts, calendar, and more

Amazon Cloud Drive: Storage at the big retailer is mainly for music, preferably MP3s that you purchase from Amazon.

  1. ‘Cloud’ computing, the fad is is, is simply distributed computing packaged in another form. Anyone else remember those days… and why we went away from them?

John Doe blindly stores files on ‘cloud’. ‘cloud’ service is interrupted for any number of reasons, ie. service outage, isp problems, hackers, local area outage, power failure, etc. John Doe no longer has access to files when he wants them, but when the problem is resolved and is at a standstill waiting for resolution that is not in his own hands. Best case, John is sitting and twiddling his thumbs for minutes to days. Worst case, John has to recreate the files he lost and start from scratch again losing time and productivity.
