The PlayStation 5 has been out for over two years, and while it has performed admirably, some believe that the next generation of consoles arrived too soon. The limited supply of the PS5 made it challenging to get a hold of one in its early months, but sales have now stabilized. Now there are rumors of the PlayStation 5 Pro launch in Q4 of 2024, so let’s dive into the details of the upcoming console.

But before proceeding to PS5 Pro, a discussion on PS5 is crucial. Despite rumors of the development of the PlayStation 6, it appears that Sony is preparing to release a PS5 Pro. The original PS5 promised native 8K gaming and up to 120 FPS, but it struggles to handle 4K at 60 FPS, especially with ray tracing enabled.

There have also been few games that truly take advantage of the current hardware. In the coming years, we can expect to see more true next-gen games, and it seems that Sony is preparing the PS5 Pro to fully support these titles with maximum performance.

Latest Updates on Sony PS5 Pro

It is essential to acknowledge that the details regarding the PS5 Slim have been officially announced by Sony and are not included in this article.

Recent leaks, notably by YouTuber RedGamingTech, suggest that a PS5 Pro is under development. According to RedGamingTech, this upgraded console is set to deliver 4K gaming experience with advanced ray tracing capabilities. The rumored computing power for this console stands at 23.04 TFLOPS, promising faster loading times and enhanced performance.

Key To Gaming, through their report on Insider Gaming, adds to the growing speculation. They indicate that “Project Trinity” is the codename for the PS5 Pro, and by November 2023, multiple game development studios will receive early access to development kits. Furthermore, Sony has been actively engaging with game developers, showcasing the improvements that the PS5 Pro could offer through various demo events.

PlayStation 5 Pro Release Date?

Sony’s Vice President Senior, Hideaki Nishino, reportedly announced in an interview with Japanese media outlet Famitsu that the launch of the PS5 Pro is scheduled for the fiscal year 2023, which begins in April. This is highly unlikely to happen as we are already in Q3 of 2023. However, rumors suggest that the PlayStation 5 Pro will be released in later half of 2024.

New PlayStation will Have Removable Disc Drive

According to recent reports, Sony is reportedly preparing to release a new version of the PS5 with a removable disc drive and potential hardware revision. This version could allow the company to sell the console without a disc drive at a lower price point while offering the disc drive as a separate accessory for those who need it. It may also potentially reduce the size of the console. Sony has not officially confirmed these details.

PlayStation 5 Pro Specifications

The PlayStation 5 Pro will have a 12-core 5.7 GHz AMD Zen 4 processor and a 32 teraflop AMD RDNA 3 graphics processor. The GPU architecture is based on RDNA 3 technology, and the device has 18 GB of GDDR6 memory with a bandwidth of 512GB/s. The PS5 Pro will likely have 1TB of storage, which users can expand with an NVMe SSD slot, and will also feature a 4K Blu-ray optical drive.

  • GPU architecture: RDNA-3
  • Memory: 18GB GDDR6
  • Bandwidth: 512GB/s
  • Storage: 1TB
  • Expandable storage: NVMe SSD slot
  • Optical Drive: 4K BluRay

As gamers, we are all eager to get the PS5 Pro. Since everything about it is based on rumors and speculation, it is difficult to predict its specifications. But let’s examine what we already know.

8K resolution

If Sony follows the same pattern as it did with the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro should receive specific quality-of-life enhancements. First and foremost, it must deliver the 8K resolution promised by Sony. In theory, the PS5 can support 8K resolution, but in practice, none of the PlayStation Studios titles have been released with 8K support. Not all games support 4K at 60 frames per second, especially when enabling ray tracing.

The CPU and GPU upgrades in the PS5 Pro could be extremely useful and valuable to gamers. As 8K TVs become more affordable and common in the coming years, this could lead to improved gaming capabilities overall.

8k on PS5 Pro

AMD RDNA3

We know that ray tracing is difficult even on PCs, and fitting it into a $599 package seems impossible. Still, we anticipate the PS5 Pro to offer something beyond the capabilities of the PS5. Perhaps we won’t have to choose between resolution and frame rate, as the PS5 Pro may support both simultaneously. We cannot expect ray tracing in all games until a technology similar to DLSS is developed. However, it should be more feature rich than the current model.

AMD RNDA 3

8K for virtual reality and water cooling

Sony may use the launch of the PS VR2 to introduce a more powerful version of the PS5 alongside it. You may not need to play at 8K, but it will be helpful for virtual reality gaming. If Sony wishes to compete with the segment’s other titans, it may want to consider an upgrade. Sony could feel a new GPU and CPU architecture similar to that AMD’s Zen 4 and RDNA-3 GPU. This would improve the existing model, which utilizes a Zen 2 processor and RDNA 2 graphics.

More recent rumors point to the use of advanced Water Cooling. The PS5 uses metal liquid, which works better than the silver thermal paste in the PS4 series. The metal liquid seems to be doing its job well, but the current Fan might be unable to keep up with the (supposed) higher temperatures of the new hardware. So Sony might need a better thermal engine to keep the console cool and stop it from slowing down. Of course, that would also mean that the price would increase, making the hardware more challenging.

A new console to play the next batch of games from PlayStation Studios

After the first round, Sony stopped making PS games for the PS5. God of War, Gran Turismo 7, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales was the first games of the generation. We also had a few PS-only games made by partner studios, like Deadloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, and Forspoken.

Now, we’re waiting for a new set of games that will show how powerful the PS5 is. I am eager to see some exclusive titles for PS5 and PS5 Pro. The new batch of exclusive games that will push the PS5 to its limits is also good marketing for the PS5 Pro.

Should You Get the PS5 or Wait for the PS5 Pro?

The rumors will keep making us think and talk about it until Sony makes an official announcement. Still, if it comes out, we could expect a few things from a PS5 Pro.

First, it will probably have better hardware than the current PS5, allowing it to have better graphics and load faster. This could include a faster CPU and GPU, as well as more RAM and space for storage.

There’s also a chance that the PS5 Pro will have new features, like better VR or playing even older PlayStation games. The recent launch of PS VR2 and the exclusive Horizon Call of the Mountain is a commended addition to next-gen gaming. For now, no exclusive title is being built for PS5 Pro.

So, if you are into gaming and want to give a shot to a console PlayStation 5 will do just fine for now – unless PS5 Pro comes will few exclusive titles.

PlayStation 5 Pro or PlayStation 5 Slim, or Both?

It is unclear whether Sony plans to release a PlayStation 5 Pro, a PlayStation 5 Slim, or possibly both. The device will likely have a 1TB storage capacity, be expandable with an NVMe SSD slot, and feature a 4K Blu-Ray optical drive.

So far, we have not seen many games that genuinely push the limits of the PS5’s hardware. The console struggles to support all of the “next-gen” features simultaneously, often requiring players to choose between higher resolution or a stable frame rate. Similarly, enabling ray tracing can also impact other aspects of the hardware. Ray tracing is a demanding technology expected to become more prevalent in the industry. It may be difficult for the PS5 to keep up with these standards without a hardware revision.

The PlayStation 4 Pro, released in 2016, promised improved performance and 4K resolution for games. While it could have dynamic solutions ranging from 2K to 4K, it was the first PlayStation console to reach 60 FPS in most games consistently. The release of the PS4 Pro set a precedent for Sony to potentially release a Pro variant of future consoles, leading to speculation about the potential release of a PS5 Pro.

It is not uncommon for Sony to release slimmed-down versions of its consoles, as the company has a history of releasing compact versions dating back to the original PlayStation. The PS4 received a slim version alongside the Pro variant in 2016. With PS5 being a relatively large console, it is unsurprising that there has been speculation about the potential release of a PS5 Slim.

PlayStation 5 Pro Price

The price of the rumored PS5 Pro is currently unknown, but experts believe it will be slightly higher than the standard PS5, possibly around $600. The inclusion of a removable disc drive could result in a lower overall cost of the console, as Sony could sell the disc drive as a third-party accessory.
